Tom Lebbon takes maiden GB3 victory at Silverstone

Rising star Tom Lebbon enjoyed a fine weekend on track as the GB3 Championship partnered by the BRDC headed for Silverstone for the second meeting of the year – with the rapid teenager storming to his maiden single-seater win.

Eager to fight back after a tricky opening weekend at Oulton Park, Tom showed encouraging pace during two days of pre-event testing – setting the third quickest time during four sessions on Thursday and then repeating the result in Friday’s two sessions.

The Elite Motorsport racer carried that form in Saturday’s qualifying session where he put his WeFinanceAnyCar.com-backed entry on the front row of the grid for the opening race, with his second best time good to enough to ensure that would also be on the front row for race two.

Tom held on to his position when the lights went out to start race one before championship leader Luke Browning managed to edge his way ahead mid-way through the opening lap.

Although Max Esterton would keep him honest in the early stages as the pair diced for third place, Tom was able to gradually ease away to take the flag in third spot for his first podium finish of the campaign.

Once again lining up on the front row of the grid for race two, Tom held his place going through Copse for the first time but got a run on leader Joel Granfors on the run to the Maggotts/Becketts complex.

Diving up the inside, Tom swept through into the lead and was able to control the race from the front as he successfully picked up his maiden single-seater victory in fine style.

The reverse grid final race started with Tom back in 19th place on the grid and – despite dropping to the back of the field through the early corners – he would manage to make his way up to 13th spot by the time the chequered flag dropped.

Tom now sits fourth in the standings ahead of the next round at Donington Park later this month.

“It’s been a hugely positive weekend and a great way to kick-start my championship after Oulton Park,” he said. “The opening race was a solid result and my first podium of the year gave me a boost in confidence going into race two.

“At the start, I got a run on Joel and once I was ahead, I was able to control the race from the front and I’m delighted to not only get my first single-seater win, but also the first for the team.

“Race three with the reverse grid was all about staying out of trouble and scoring points which is what we did and overall, it’s been a great weekend in terms of the championship.”
