For some it’s not just about affordability, or the engine size, it’s the colour that counts. So what is the most popular car colour?

Grey has cemented its position as Britain’s most popular new car colour, with more than half a million models spec’d in that time in 2019.

It was chosen for almost a quarter of new cars bought last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders – outselling black by more than 50,000 vehicles.

Some 521,273 new motors that left showrooms in 2019 were grey, the official figures revealed.

The Volkswagen Golf was officially the most-chosen model to be painted grey, records show.

Black was in second place with 466,276 cars, accounting for one in five new vehicles leaving dealer forecourts.

In third spot was white, representing 18 per cent of all new models and a total of 414.403 sales.

It means, rather blandly, that three out of five cars joining UK roads last term were shades of monochrome.

The numbers also show the recent shift in new vehicle colour preferences over the last decade, with black being most popular from 2009 to 2012, followed by an unprecedented popularity of white motors.

The white car phenomenon had previously been put down to the popularity of tech devices like Apple products, but also car makers' preference to offer white as a no-cost paint option on new models.

White quickly started to fall down the pecking order when many manufacturers chose to remove it as a free paint option in hope that buyers would pay extra to remain fashionable.

The top five most popular colours for new cars in 2019 was completed by blue and red in fourth and fifth respectively.

The only new entrant in the top 10 was yellow, which replaced beige in tenth place.

Maroon, cream and pink were the most unpopular new car colours last year, taking a combined market share of less than 1%.
