Best value cars to insure

The annual cost of insuring your vehicle is one of the biggest motoring costs, especially if you’re a new driver, you’ve acquired points on your licence or you’ve had an accident in the last year. Whatever your circumstances, we cover smaller city cars and larger family cars in our guide on the cheapest cars to insure.

As a bit of background, cars are divided into groups, from 1 to 50, with group 1 being the cheapest to insure. The group a particular car model fits into is usually determined by trim level and engine size and type.  If a car  has an excellent security rating, or an abundance of safety equipment, these factors can all help to bring down the insurance premium.

1) Volkswagen Polo

If you choose one of the lower powered models, for example the 1.0L engine, these qualify for group 1 insurance.  This is a perfect small city/ runaround car that is easy to drive, economical to run, quiet, comfortable and has a pliable ride quality that puts some executive cars to shame. There really is very little to fault.

2) Skoda Fabia

Again, this supermini which is part of the product line of the VW group, doesn’t exactly give off the air of prestige, but it gives you the basics at a reasonable insurance cost. It’s the perfect car for a pragmatic car buyer, as it’s not only a practical vehicle, but is built with quality, is simple and has plenty of space. You’ll need to opt for the 1.0L once again which may not give you all the power you wish, but it’s a cheap way to get around.

3) Seat Ibizia

The SEAT Ibizia once again shares its parts with the Volkswagen Polo. We’re seeing quite a German car theme running here. The Ibizia does come out cheaper, and is a brilliant modern, compact car that can easily seat four adults and has a fairly large boot space on offer. The only downsides are the handling and the interior not being so up to date as other rival models. Choose the 1.0L engine and it may lack in power, but there are lots of other benefits to this sleek car.

4) Renault Clio

Renault have certainly refined the much loved Clio to offer motorists a smart and classy vehicle inside and out. In the basic Expression trim, which is the one to opt for to get the lowest insurance, the construction feels very sturdy, the materials used inside are high quality, and it’s spacious for its size. This would be perfect as a small family car, and is only in insurance group 3.

5) Kia Rio

The Kia Rio certainly emanates being a grown up and mature car that is best used for motorway journeys. On the motorway it’s very stable, with the suspension absorbing bumps and potholes better than it would around town. The spacious interior is a big selling point, however the interior is quite bland and uninspiring. To qualify for the cheaper insurance bracket, you’ll need to opt for the least powerful engine once again, to sit you in group 2 insurance.

Are there any other cars you think should make the list?

Make sure you shop around, and once you’ve discovered the car that’s right for you, compare insurance companies and websites before you buy. To gain an accurate value, always be transparent and honest when answering the questions.
